Carolina Panthers quarterback Bryce Young is once again in the spotlight as he faces questions about his future with the team, specifically regarding the potential exercise of his fifth-year option.
In a thrilling wild-card playoff showdown against the Los Angeles Rams, who are among the favorites to win Super Bowl LX, Young showcased his talents. Despite the Panthers ultimately falling short in a nail-biting 34-31 defeat, he delivered an impressive performance, accumulating 264 passing yards and throwing a touchdown while also adding 24 rushing yards and another score to his tally.
The loss was particularly disappointing for Young and the Panthers, as it denied them what could have been a memorable upset in recent playoff history. Following the game, reporters were curious about whether Young’s commendable showing was enough to convince the Panthers to pick up his fifth-year option. When asked for his thoughts on the matter, he offered a straightforward response: "Not my call to make."
As he wrapped up his third season in the NFL, Young achieved personal bests across several key metrics: he posted a completion percentage of 63.6%, threw for a total of 3,011 yards, connected on 23 touchdowns, and finished with a passer rating of 87.8. However, despite these individual successes, the overall performance of Carolina's offense remained concerning, as the team ranked 27th in the league with an average of 295.6 yards per game and 26th in passing yards, averaging just 179.3 yards per game.
When reflecting on his development during the past season, Young attributed his progress to the collective effort and ownership from both the offensive unit and the entire team. "Just ownership from the unit, from the offense, ownership from the team," he noted. "I'm grateful to have a great group of guys, grateful to be empowered."
As the spring approaches, the Panthers will need to make a crucial decision regarding whether to activate Young's fifth-year option, which will significantly impact his future with the franchise.
