Egyptian Spring Onions: Higher Production and Market Challenges Explained (2025)

Egypt’s spring onion fields are bursting with abundance this season, but there’s a catch. While production is booming, demand is lagging behind, leaving exporters like Stars of Export navigating a tricky market. FreshPlaza highlights this intriguing paradox, pointing to the economic downturn abroad and the initial surge in exports as key factors.

Amro Yassin, from Stars of Export, sheds light on the situation: “We’re seeing a significant increase in spring onion production compared to previous years. However, demand is currently subdued due to the global economic climate. We exported substantial volumes at the season’s start, which might have contributed to the temporary dip in demand. But here’s where it gets interesting: we anticipate a rebound in December, as the holiday season traditionally boosts consumption.”
Yassin emphasizes that Stars of Export isn’t chasing new markets. “We’re already present in all viable spring onion markets. Our strategy now is to deepen our footprint in existing markets by increasing supply volumes. It’s about strengthening relationships and ensuring consistent availability for our established customers.”

Logistics, however, remain a thorn in the side. Yassin explains, “And this is the part most people miss: delays in shipping and unpredictable weather conditions are creating significant challenges. To mitigate this, we’re diversifying our shipping destinations, but longer transport times can impact product shelf life, presenting a new set of hurdles.”

Despite these challenges, Yassin remains cautiously optimistic. “Current market prices are disappointingly low, mirroring last year’s oversupply situation. However, we’re hopeful for a turnaround as Egypt enters its winter season, traditionally a period of higher demand. Will the market bounce back as expected, or will oversupply continue to suppress prices? Only time will tell.”

This situation raises intriguing questions: Can Egypt’s spring onion exporters weather the storm of fluctuating demand and logistical hurdles? Will the anticipated December surge materialize, or will the market remain saturated? What strategies could exporters employ to navigate this complex landscape? We invite your thoughts and insights in the comments below.
