The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that the transmission likely occurred in three stages: a rabid silver-haired bat infected a skunk, which then infected the donor, leading to the kidney recipient's infection.
In December of last year, a Michigan man received a left kidney transplant from the Idaho donor at an Ohio hospital. Tragically, he passed away approximately six weeks later. The CDC confirmed the presence of the rabies virus RNA in the recipient's saliva, nuchal skin, and brain tissue samples.
Further investigation revealed that the Idaho donor had been scratched by a skunk in late October 2024. The incident occurred when the man was holding a kitten in an outbuilding on his rural property. He later died after experiencing symptoms such as confusion, difficulty swallowing and walking, and hallucinations.
Following the donor's death, his corneas were used for transplants. Three patients—one each from California, Idaho, and New Mexico—received grafts in December of last year and January. However, due to the risk, these cornea recipients underwent precautionary graft removal. Additionally, a planned transplantation of a fourth corneal graft to a Missouri patient was canceled. Fortunately, the three patients who received the grafts showed no symptoms.
